The short answer

Aircon repair starts with a diagnosis, not an automatic gas top-up. Weak cooling, water leaks, noise, odours or repeated tripping can come from airflow, drainage, electrical, sensor or refrigerant faults. Switch off a leaking or electrically unsafe unit and arrange qualified service; replacement makes sense only after age, condition and repair value are considered.

Common signs that need attention

Not cooling well

Dirty filters, restricted coils, incorrect settings, fan faults, a refrigerant leak or an undersized system can all reduce performance.

Water leaking indoors

A blocked, loose or badly graded condensate drain may overflow. Switch the unit off if water is near electrics or damaging finishes.

Unusual noise or smell

Rattles, grinding, burnt smells or persistent mustiness deserve inspection. Do not keep operating a unit with an electrical or mechanical warning sign.

Trips the power

Repeated tripping is not something to reset indefinitely. Stop using the unit and have both the equipment and electrical supply checked.

Ice on the coil or pipes

Low airflow and refrigerant-circuit problems can cause icing. Let the unit thaw while switched off and book a proper diagnosis.

Short cycling

Frequent starts and stops can relate to sizing, sensors, airflow, electrical supply or controls and can shorten compressor life.

What service should cover

More than washing a filter

A useful service inspects filters, indoor and outdoor coils, fans, drainage, electrical connections, controls, temperatures and the visible condition of the refrigerant circuit. The technician should explain any defect before adding parts or refrigerant.

Refrigerant does not get “used up” in normal operation. If charge is low, finding and addressing the reason matters more than repeatedly topping it up.

Use the whole cost, not one fault

Consider the unit’s age, efficiency, refrigerant availability, repair history, warranty and whether it was correctly sized in the first place. A repair can be sensible on a sound system; repeated major failures on an old, inefficient or badly sized unit can point toward replacement.
